Lions Fall to No. 1 Wingate in Saturday Doubleheader

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel Baseball team faced #1 Wingate University on Saturday afternoon. The top ranked team in Division II defeated the Lions in both games of the doubleheader. This moves Emmanuel's record to 11-17 on the season.
 
Game one:
The Lions opened up scoring in the fourth inning when Yeshua Saint singled to send Cody Minnis home. However, a three run fifth for the Bulldogs gave the Lions a deficit they couldn't recover from as Wingate went on to win, 6-2.
 
Brody McCullough earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for Wingate. The righty lasted six innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out nine and walking zero. Jordan Howard and Corey Avant entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
 
Jake Denham took the loss for Emmanuel. Denham went six and a third innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out three.
 
Wingate smacked three home runs on the day. Seaver King had a homer in the fifth inning. Andrew Motsinger had a dinger in the ninth inning. Cameron Carraway went deep in the fifth inning.
 
Emmanuel totaled seven hits. Yeshua Saint and Tyler Smith each collected two hits to lead Emmanuel.
 
Wingate collected 13. Motsinger, Mitch Farris, Logan Mcneely, and Carraway each had multiple hits for Wingate. Motsinger led Wingate with three hits in five at bats.
 
Game two:
Emmanuel lost the lead late in a 2-1 defeat to Wingate in Saturday's final game. The game was tied at one with Wingate batting in the top of the sixth when Ricky Clark singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
 
The pitching was strong on both sides. Wingate pitchers struck out seven, while Emmanuel sat down eight.
 
Yeshua Saint sent Luke Patty home in the bottom of the third, putting the first run of the game on the board. 
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Wingate tied things up at one. Seaver King doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
 
Austin Mitchell earned the win for the Bulldogs. The righthander surrendered one run on five hits over six innings, striking out six and walking one. Sam Broderson threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Broderson recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Wingate.
Clifford Brown took the loss for Emmanuel. The lefthander allowed one hit and one run over one inning.
 
Simon Boggie started the game for Emmanuel. The righthander went five innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight
 
Luke Patty, Cody Minnis, Yeshua Saint, Tyler Smith, and Guy Anderberg all had one hit. 
Emmanuel was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Zachary Bergstrom had the most chances in the field with ten.
 
Emmanuel baseball will conclude their series with Wingate on Sunday at 1:00pm.
