Lions Come Up Just Short of Bulldogs

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel softball team began conference play on Saturday afternoon against Barton College. The Bulldogs narrowly clipped the Lions in both games of the doubleheader. This moves Emmanuel's record to 17-12 overall and 0-2 in conference play. 
 
Game one:
The Lions stayed in it until the end, but Barton pulled away late in a 2-1 victory in the opener. The game was tied at one with Barton batting in the top of the seventh when the Bulldogs secured the game-winning run.
 
The pitching was strong on both sides. Barton pitchers struck out five, while the Lions sat down eight.
 
Barton got things started in the first inning when Emily Bell's sac fly scored one run.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Lions tied things up at one. Chloe Nadler drove in one when she doubled.
 
Gracelyn Massey was the winning pitcher for Barton College. The hurler surrendered zero runs on zero hits over one and two-thirds innings, walking zero.
 
Dani Fairey took the loss for the Lions. The lefty allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.
 
Rilee Jones started the game for Barton College. She allowed five hits and one run over five and a third innings, striking out five and walking zero.
 
Nadler led the Lions with two hits in three at bats.
 
 
Game two:
The Lions fought back after falling down by five runs in the second inning. The comeback fell just short though, in a 10-9 defeat to the Bulldogs in the closer. The Lions scored eight runs in the failed comeback. Chloe Nadler, Gabby Buffington, Glory Thompson, and Jaryn Gibson fueled the rally with RBIs.
 
Barton got on the board in the second inning with a double that scored one run.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions tied things up at six. Emmanuel scored one run when Thompson singled.
 
After Barton scored three runs in the top of the seventh, the Lions answered with three of their own. The answer came when Nadler singled on a 3-1 count, Gibson singled on a 2-0 count, and Kyna Chyna singled on a 2-0 count, each of them driving a runner home.
 
Miranda Holmes toed the rubber for Barton. The fireballer went four innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out one.
 
Madison Edwards was in the pitcher's circle for the Lions. The righty lasted one and one-third innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one. Kaitlyn Pickens threw five and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.
 
Emmanuel socked one home run on the day. Nadler went for the long ball in the fourth inning.
 
The Lions tallied 13 hits on the day. Mackensie Hogan and Chloe Nadler each had three hits to lead the way. 
 
Barton College saw the ball well today, racking up 12 hits in the game. 
 
Next up, softball will host Chowan on Sunday, March 20 at 12:00pm.
