Lions Fall to Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE, NC - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team traveled to Mount Olive, NC, to compete against the University of Mount Olive (UMO). Despite a close 3rd set, the Lions could not overcome their low hitting percentage for the match, losing 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 23-25). 
 
Emmanuel hit just 0.028% (10-36) in the first set, compared to UMO's 0.313% (12-32). Emmanuel started the set on a 7-3 run to hold an early lead over UMO. However, the Trojans quickly came back, tying the set at 10-10. The two teams remained close with Emmanuel down by 2 at 18-20. However, UMO went on to score five straight points, successfully winning the set 18-25. 
 
The Lions increased their hitting percentage in the 2nd set, hitting 0.103% (11-29). The two teams started the 2nd set close, with Emmanuel finding itself down 2 points at 9-11. Shortly after, UMO went on a 8-4 run, taking a 19-13 lead. As the teams approached the end of the set, the deficit was too much for Emmanuel. UMO won the 2nd set 25-17. 
 
The Lions hit much better in the 3rd set, hitting 0.314% (14-35). The two teams traded points to start the set, finding themselves tied at 6-6. However, UMO went on a 8-4 run to earn a 14-10 lead over Emmanuel. UMO held onto a 4 point lead as the set continued, earning a 20-16 lead. However, Emmanuel responded with a 5-1 run, taking their first lead of the set at 21-20. The teams traded points, finding themselves tied at 23-23. After a kill from UMO and an attack error by Emmanuel, the Lions loss two straight points to lose the set 23-25. 
 
Gustavo Cavalcanti led the team with 17 kills, followed by Carlos Guerrero with 10 and Eli Zdonek with 5. Gustavo Cavalcanti scored the team's only ace. Eli Zdonek, Gustavo Cavalcanti, and Daniel Beecham each recorded 1 block. Henrick Westhoff finished with 31 assists. Carlos Guerrero led the team in digs with 12, followed by Henrick Westhoff with 6 and Eli Zdonek with 6. 
 
With today's loss, the Lions fall to 11-12 (5-6 CC). The Lions will continue their season as they travel to Wilson, NC, to compete against Barton College on April 2nd (SAT) at 2:00 PM.
