Pickens, Edwards Throw Near-Perfect Games as Lions Shutout Valkyries, 8-0 and 11-0

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel Softball team (26-15, 7-5 CC) completed a pair of shutouts against Converse University in Friday's doubleheader, winning 8-0 and 11-0. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the run ahead rule (an eight run advantage after five innings is an automatic victory).
 
Game one:
Kaitlyn Pickens shut down Converse in the opener, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Lions to an 8-0 victory. She allowed only one hit.
 
The Lions secured the victory thanks to five runs in the second inning. Jaryn Gibson, Lexi Jordan, Gabby Buffington, and Glory Thompson all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
 
Pickens toed the rubber for the Lions. The pitcher allowed one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.
 
Maggie Griffis led things off in the pitcher's circle for Converse University. The bulldog went one and one-third innings, allowing five runs on five hits and walking zero. Serreh Ballard threw three and a third innings out of the bullpen.
 
The Lions tallied 11 hits in the game. Gibson, Buffington, Mackensie Hogan, and Kya Santiago each collected two hits to lead the way. Emmanuel didn't commit a single error in the field. Chloe Nadler had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.
 
Game two:
Madison Edwards didn't allow a single run as the Lions defeated Converse University 11-0 on Friday's final matchup. Edwards allowed just one hit.
 
The Lions secured the victory thanks to nine runs in the fourth inning. Kya Santiago, Jaryn Gibson, Lexi Jordan, Jewels Ayers, Lily Shelton, and Kyna Cheney each drove in runs during the massive inning.
 
Edwards was in the pitcher's circle for the Lions. The righty lasted all five innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out nine and walking zero.
 
The Lions collected 13 hits. Cheney, Mackensie Hogan, and Glory Thompson all managed multiple hits for Emmanuel. Cheney went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the effort. Emmanuel was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Shelton had the most chances in the field with nine.
 
Next up, Emmanuel Softball will host Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 6 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
