Lions Take Down Bulldogs in First Round of Conference Playoffs

DUNCAN, SC - The #6 seed Emmanuel softball team began postseason play on Thursday night, facing the #3 seed Barton Bulldogs. The Lions took care of business, defeating the Bulldogs 8-3.

The Conference Carolinas Championship is double elimination, so this victory will keep the Lions in the winners' bracket.

The first three innings were a pitching battle, with only one hit given up between the two squads. Dani Fairey got things started on the mound for the Lions, while Miranda Holmes kicked off pitching for the Bulldogs.

Heading into the fourth inning the Lions were yet to record a hit. However, Chloe Nadler was soon the first to get on the board when she singled up the middle. Mackenzie Hogan proceeded to get walked, advancing Nadler to second. Kya Santiago was next at the plate and doubled to center field, driving Nadler home. Lily Jordan followed with a two-RBI single when she sent both runners home and made the score 3-0 in favor of the Lions.

The Lions added to their tally in the top of the fifth, thanks to a single from Kyna Cheney that sent Lily Shelton home. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the same inning, scoring twice. However, the Lions still led, 4-2. The sixth was scoreless, but another double from Santiago in the top of the seventh sent both Cheney and Glory Thompson across home plate, putting Santiago at a total of three RBIs on the day. Ally Harris got a pair of RBIs of her own in the very next at bat, making the score 8-2 and essentially sealing the deal for the Lions. Barton would score once in the final half-inning of the game, but that was all they could muster as Emmanuel took the victory, 8-3.

Dani Fairey got the win on the mound, but Maddie Edwards recorded the save, pitching the final three innings. Fairey allowed just four hits and two runs, striking out two and walking none. Edwards allowed only two hits and zero earned runs, also striking out two.

Kya Santiago and Kyna Cheney led the way with two hits each.

Next up, Emmanuel will play the winner between #2 Mount Olive and #7 UNC Pembroke at 12:00pm on Friday, April 29.
