SPARTANBURG, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Spartanburg, SC to open conference play against Converse. The Lions got off to a hot start offensively and never trailed, defeating the Valkyries 63-48. With the win, Emmanuel improves to 4-4 overall, 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Lions offense was clicking early in the first quarter, with senior,
Tyasia Freeman scoring 8 of the Lions 18 points. The Lions shot 8-15 from the field (53.3%), 1-2 from beyond the arc. After one, the Lions led Converse, 18-8.
In the second quarter, the Lions were 8-18 from the field (44%) and were 2-5 from three. The Lions extended their lead to as much as 20 points, with 1:20 to play in the half. At the half, the Lions led 36-16.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, with the Lions offense slowing slightly. Emmanuel was 3-12 from the field, shooting 25%, but was 3-7 from three (42.8%). After three, the Lions led 50-29.
The Lions shot 42.8% from the field in the fourth quarter, with junior,
Maddie Futch leading the way with six points. The Valkyries went on a bit of a run, outscoring the Lions 19-13 in the quarter, but it wasn't enough. Emmanuel would take the victory, 63-48.
Three Lions were in double figures on the day. Senior
Tyasia Freeman led the way with a double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior,
Sydney Wyatt also contributed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Maddie Futch had 12 points on the day and 9 rebounds.
Next up the Lions will host North Greenville University on Saturday at 2p.m.
