Emmanuel Softball Splits Doubleheader with Barton

WILSON, NC - The Emmanuel softball team began Conference play against Barton on Friday. The Lions split the doubleheader, winning 4-0 before losing 8-13. This moves Emmanuel's record to 12-12 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 

Game 1

Madison Edwards threw a gem on Friday for the Emmanuel College Lions, allowing zero runs and besting Barton College by a score of 4-0.

The Emmanuel College Lions got things started in the second inning when Abigail Curry grounded out, scoring one run.

One bright spot for Barton College was a single by Emily Bell in the first inning.

Edwards earned the victory in the pitcher's circle for the Emmanuel College Lions. The righty lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out seven.

Kiersten Cooper started the game for Barton College. The hurler allowed three hits and one run over one and one-third innings, striking out one and walking one.  Miranda Holmes and AnnaKate Gilchrist entered the game from the bullpen, throwing five innings and two-thirds of an inning respectively.

The team racked up ten hits. Kyna Cheney and Lexi Jordan all collected multiple hits for Emmanuel College. Jordan and Cheney all had three hits to lead Emmanuel the team to a victory.

Barton College was sure handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Sydney Wade had the most chances in the field with eight.

Game 2

Scorekeepers were kept busy today during a high-scoring contest between Barton College and Emmanuel College where the Lions lost 13-8.

Barton College took an early lead in the first inning. Lindsey Massengill drove in one when Massengill singled.

After the Emmanuel Lions scored two runs in the top of the fourth, Barton College answered with two of their own.  The Lions scored when Mackensie Hogan grounded out, scoring one run and Kyna Cheney singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Barton College then answered when Massengill singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run and Barton College scored one run on a stolen base.

Barton College took the lead for good with seven runs in the third inning. In the third Emily Bell singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Gracelyn Massey singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, Sloane Correa singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run, an error scored two runs for Barton College, and Savannah Branch singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.

Emmanuel College scored three runs in the second inning. Alyssa Adams, Lexi Jordan, and Jaryn Gibson each had RBIs in the frame.

Rilee Jones led things off in the pitcher's circle for Barton College. The pitcher lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out one.

Dani Fairey toed the rubber for Emmanuel College. The lefty surrendered four runs on five hits over two innings, walking one.  Kaitlyn Pickens and Macy Kelley entered the game from the bullpen, throwing three innings and two-thirds of an inning respectively.

The Emmanuel Lions launched two home runs on the day. Adams went for the long ball in the second and sixth innings.

The Lions racked up 11 hits in the game.  Adams, Gibson, Buffington, and Jordan all had multiple hits for Emmanuel College. Gibson and Adams each managed three hits to lead the Lions Varsity.

Barton College collected 16 hits on the day. Branch, Correa, Bell, Massengill, and Massey each managed multiple hits for Barton College.

Next up, Emmanuel softball will face Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday, March 21 on the road.
