DUE WEST, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Due West, SC tonight to face Erskine College in Conference Carolina action. The Lions got off to a slow start offensively, but were able to hold the Flying Fleet at bay late, winning this one 55-48. With the win, the Lions improve to 13-6 overall, 9-2 in conference action.
The first quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team shooting above 15%. The Lions were 2-15 from the field and 2-7 from beyond the arc, with threes from senior,
Sydney Wyatt and junior,
Abby Crawford.
In the second quarter, the Lions offense started to click, with senior,
Tyasia Freeman getting going early. The Lions started off the quarter with a 7-0 run and shot 38.5% from the field in the quarter. The Lions would lead by as much as 9 early, but the Flying Fleet would come back late and trail by 4 at the half, 21-17.
The third quarter saw the Lions quickly expand their lead to 8, but Erskine shot 50% from the field in the quarter, and a jumper by Anzya Cook with 3:41 to play in the quarter would tie the game at 29-29. The Lions were 3-6 from beyond the arc in the quarter, and a key three by
Sydney Wyatt gave the Lions the lead again and they finished out the quarter leading by 6, 37-31.
In the fourth quarter of play, the Lions were 6-13 from the field and 5-6 from the foul line. Erskine, however, would go on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 41-41 midway through the quarter. The Lions would quickly answer on two key free throws by
Tyasia Freeman and a three by junior,
Addie Penick. The Flying Fleet would bring the game back within two with 2:41 to play, but the Lions would finish the game on a 7-2 run to win, 55-48.
Three Lions finished the night in double figures scoring, with seniors
Sydney Wyatt (17 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists) and
Tyasia Freeman (13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals) ending the night with double doubles.
Abby Crawford contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
