Lions Fall to Anderson in Five Set Thriller

Anderson, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball team traveled to Anderson, SC tonight for a regional contest with the Anderson University Trojans. Early in the game, the Lions proved they were up to the task, taking a close set one, 28-26. The Trojans responded well to take the next two sets, 25-21, 25-17. The Lions roared back to take set four, 25-17 forcing a fifth set. 
 
The first set was competitive from the start, with several ties and lead changes early. The Lions started to pull away with two service aces by Sami Gambill, but the Trojans responded to tie things at 10-10. A 5-0 run by Anderson would put the Trojans out ahead, 16-11 but the Lions would tie things again at 20-20. The two teams traded points to force the set to extra points, with the Lions scoring the final three points on kills by Jocelyn Martin and Ellie Jackson to close it out, 28-26. 
 
In the second set, the Lions got off to a 3-1 lead. The Trojans would tie things at 5-5 on an attack error by the Lions. The two teams would trade points and the lead until late in the set, when the Trojans took control scoring the final six points to win the set, 25-21.
 
The third set saw the Lions jump out to a 6-2 lead. The Trojans used a 4-0 run to tie things at 6-6. Anderson would take the lead for good on an attack error by Martin, expanding the gap to as much as eight points, 20-12. The Trojans could close out the set, 25-17.
 
The Lions responded well in set four, jumping out to an early 5-2 lead. The Trojans would use a 3-0 run to tie things at 5, but the Lions would respond to retake the lead on a kill by Brianna Bigelow. The Lions would extend their lead to as much as eight points late in the set, 23-15 and would win the set, 25-17. 
 
The fifth set was competitive from the start. The Trojans would take a 6-3 lead, but the Lions kept battling back to keep things close. The Lions tied things at 12-12 on a kill by Alaina Emminger and the two traded points until the Trojans scored the final two points to take the set, 17-15 and the game 3-2.
 
Overall, the Lions had 57 kills, 54 assists, 9 aces, 12 blocks, and 78 digs. 
 
Senior, Emily Hanson led the way with 14 kills, while Ellie Jackson had yet another double-double with 11 kills and 25 digs. Hanson, Brianna Bigelow, and Cailin Pritchard had a block party with four blocks apiece. Pritchard, Jackson, and Sami Gambill were all strong at the service line with three aces each.
