GREENWOOD, SC – The Emmanuel Softball team is competing in a tournament at Lander University this weekend. In game one, the Lions faced a familiar foe…Limestone University, who Emmanuel dropped two midweek games to earlier this week. Today,
Maddie Edwards pitched six strong innings and three Lions went yard to give Emmanuel a shutout victory, 8-0. With the win, the Lions improve to 4-8 on the season.
In the bottom of the first,
Ellee Varner got things started for the Lions with a single to third and advanced to second base.
Lexi Jordan reached on a fielder's choice, with Varner out at third. Jordan advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a triple by
Jaryn Gibson to make the score 1-0 Lions.
After a few scoreless innings,
Isabel Harrison started the bottom of the fourth with a double to left and advanced to third on a sac bunt by
Abigail Curry. Varner would reach on a fielder's choice to the pitcher and would steal second, with Harrison out at the plate. Jordan singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Varner to make the score 2-0 Lions.
Alyssa Adams hit a homerun to clear the bases and give Emmanuel a 4-0 lead, and Gibson followed that up with a homerun to left to add to the lead, 5-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions bats were at it again. Jordan got things going with a single to left, advancing to second on a groundout. Gibson hit her second homerun of the morning to left to score Jordan and give the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Gabby Buffington put an exclamation point on the game with a homerun of her own, to give the Lions a 8-0 win.
At the plate, three Lions went yard (Buffington, Gibson (2), Adams).
Jaryn Gibson was a perfect 4-4 from the plate and
Isabel Harrison was 3-3.
Lexi Jordan also had 3 hits on the morning.
Maddie Edward pitched six scoreless innings, facing 25 batters. She struck out two and gave up five hits.
Next up, the Lions will face Flagler College this afternoon in game two of the tournament hosted by Lander University.
