DUE WEST, SC – The Emmanuel Softball team continued play in the Lander University tournament today, facing Emory and Henry next. The Lions bats got going early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the 1
st. Emmanuel would control the pace of the game the rest of the way, and won 8-0. With the win, the Lions improve to 5-9 on the season.
The Lions started things off the right way in the 1
st inning.
Ellee Varner hit a single to center to start the day.
Lexi Jordan followed that up with a single to right to advance Varner to second.
Alyssa Adams added a single to score Varner and give the Lions a 1-0 lead early.
Gabby Buffington hit a single to right field to advance Adams to second and score Jordan, 2-0 Lions.
Isabel Harrison added a single to right field to load the bases.
Kelley Feigen got in on the action with a single to left, scoring Adams and giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Kinsley Goolsby flied out to center field, but scored Buffington, making it 4-0 Lions.
After a few scoreless innings, the Lions got back into the swing of things in the bottom of the 3
rd. Buffington started things off with a homerun to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 4
th, Emmanuel kept the momentum in their corner.
Jaryn Gibson started the inning with a single to right center. Adams followed that up with a single to right center, and single by Buffington scored Gibson to give the Lions a 6-0 lead. Harrison added a single to load the bases for Feigen. Feigen walked, to score Adams and give Emmanuel a 7-0 advantage. Goolsby reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Buffington and giving the Lions a 8-0 victory.
At the plate,
Isabel Harrison and
Gabby Buffington went 3-3 on the day.
On the mound,
Maddie Edwards got the start and pitched five scoreless innings for the Lions. She struck out five batters and gave up two hits.
Up next, the Lions will face Wingate University to close out the Lander tournament.
