FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel Softball team hosted Newberry College today in a doubleheader. The Lions earned a 4-2 victory in game one, with a strong outing by
Maddie Edwards, and earned an exciting 3-2 victory in game two on a walk-off double by
Isabel Harrison! With the sweep, the Lions improve to 7-10 on the season.
GAME ONE –
The Lions got off to a quick start in game one.
Ellee Varner started off the first inning with a walk.
Lexi Jordan advanced the runner on a two-out single to center field, with both runners advancing on the throw.
Alyssa Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and
Kelley Feigen took advantage, singling to left field to score Varner and Jordan and give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Newberry responded in the top of the 3
rd, scoring two runs on two hits to tie things up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the 4
th, the Lions would respond.
Gabby Buffington started things off with a single to center and stole second.
Kinsley Goolsby grounded out to the pitcher to advance Buffington to third.
Abby Rocco reached on an error to score Buffington and make it 3-2 Lions. Varner (pinch runner) advanced to second on a wild pitch and was brought in on a double by
Isabel Harrison to give the Lions a 4-2 lead.
The two teams remained scoreless the rest of the way, and the Lions took game one, 4-2.
At the plate,
Ellee Varner went 2-2 and
Isabel Harrison contributed a double.
On the mound,
Maddie Edwards got the start and pitched 7 strong innings. She gave up two runs on 10 hits, striking out four of the 31 batters she faced.
GAME TWO –
In game two, the Lions got off to an early lead. In the bottom of the first,
Ellee Varner picked up where she left off in game one with a single to center.
Jaryn Gibson advanced Varner with a single to left field.
Lexi Jordan followed that up with a single to right to score Varner and advance Gibson to second, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves responded in the top of the 4
th with a run on two hits and an error, leaving two runners on base, making the score 1-1.
Newberry took their first lead of the game in the top of the 6
th scoring a run on two hits and an error, leaving two on base, to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the 7
th, the Lions responded in a big way. Buffington started things off with a homer to left field to tie things up at 2-2.
Abigail Curry kept things going with a double to left field. Varner would single to third to advance Curry to third, and
Isabel Harrison would hit a walk-off single to right field to score Curry and give Emmanuel the 3-2 win!
At the plate,
Lexi Jordan went 2-2 with
Jaryn Gibson and
Gabby Buffington each going 2-3.
On the mound,
Macy Kelley had a solid outing going 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits. She struck out nine of the 30 batters she faced.
Next up the Lions will host Anderson in a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch at 1PM and 3PM.
