CENTRAL, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball team traveled to Central, SC to take on the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan in conference play. The Warriors got off to a strong start, taking the first set, 25-20. The Lions responded well to earn the win in set two, 25-18 but SWU rallied to win set three, 25-22. The Warriors took set four 25-17 to earn the 3-1 victory. With the loss, the Lions fall to 12-6 on the season, 9-2 in conference play.
The two teams traded points and the lead early in the 1
st set with the Lions pulling ahead 7-3 on kills by
Brianna Bigelow and
Ellie Jackson. SWU quickly tied the set up at 7-7. A 3-0 run by the Lions midway through the set gave Emmanuel a 16-13 lead, but SWU responded late in the set to tie it at 18-18. The Warriors closed out the set strong to earn the 25-20 win.
SWU took an early 5-1 lead in set two, but the Lions responded well with a kill by
Isabella Reyes to tie it at 5-5. An ace by
Asia Queen and a kill by
Faith Kelly quickly made it 10-6, Lions. With the Lions up 15-11, a 4-1 run made it 19-12 Emmanuel. The Warriors kept things close, but the Lions closed out the set strong on a kill by
Ellie Jackson to take the set, 25-18.
The two teams battled to start the third set, with both sides making big plays. The Lions took a 10-5 lead on aces by
Madelyn Banton. Emmanuel pushed their lead to 14-7 on kills by
Ellie Jackson and
Brianna Bigelow. The Lions led until late in the set when the Warriors tied it at 20-20. The Warriors outscored the Lions 5-3 the rest of the way to win set three, 25-23.
The fourth set saw the two teams trade points and the lead early. SWU pulled away, 10-6 and led the rest of the way. The Warriors collected 10 kills and 4 blocks in the 4
th set to earn the 25-17 set win and take the game 3-1.
Overall, the Lions had 44 kills, 42 assists, 10 aces, 4 blocks and 81 digs.
Ellie Jackson led the way with 12 kills and 1.5 blocks, with
Marusa Pesut contributing 37 assists.
Asia Queen led the team with 4 aces on the night and 27 digs.
The Lions look to bounce back against Young Harris on Saturday at 1PM in the Shaw Athletic Center.
