Lions Fall to Young Harris 57-52

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team hosted Young Harris College this afternoon in conference action. The matchup was competitive from the start, but the Mountain Lions led by 11, 33-22 at the break. The Lions made adjustments at the half, cutting the Young Harris lead to four points late, but the Mountain Lions held on to take the first Roar War win on the hardwood, 57-52. With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in conference action. 

The Lions took the lead early, 7-3 on buckets by Natalee Goff and Naomi Roberts. Young Harris responded well to take the lead, 8-7 on free throws and push their lead to 14-7 with 3:27 to play in the 1st. Roberts and Carmen Cabello-Rivera each connected from three-point range late to cut the Mountain Lions lead to 3, 18-15 after the first. In the first quarter, the Lions shot 6-15 from the field (40%) and 3-8 from beyond the arc. 

The Lions quickly tied things up at 18 on a three by Kate Jackson to kick off the 2nd quarter, but Young Harris pulled ahead on a 12-1 run to go up 30-20 with 2:17 to play until half. At the break, Young Harris led the Lions 33-22. In the 2nd, the Lions connected on 3-14 from the field. 

After the break, the Mountain Lions pushed their lead to 15, 38-23 which was their largest lead of the game. Key plays by Goff, Lizzie Teasley and Emma Leonard quickly cut the Mountain Lions lead to 4, 38-34 with 4:21 to play in the 3rd. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with the Mountain Lions leading by 7, 48-41 after three. In the third, the Lions shot 50% from the field and 4-6 from the three-point line. 

In the final quarter, the Mountain Lions pushed their lead back to 9 points with 5:54 to play.  Impact plays by Goff and Roberts kept the game close, but the Mountain Lions came away with a five-point victory, 57-52. In the fourth, the Lions shot 3-10 from the field and 2-6 from three-point range.

Naomi Roberts led the Lions in scoring with 21 points, while Natalee Goff contributed 16. Emma Leonard picked up 6 rebounds on the afternoon, with Kate Jackson leading the way with 4 assists.

Next up, the Lions will travel to Due West, SC on December 3 at 5PM to face Erskine College.
