DUE WEST, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Due West, SC tonight to take on Erskine College in conference action. The Flying Fleet jumped out to an early lead, but once the Lions settled into a rhythm, they began to control the pace of the game and took a 29-24 lead into the half. The second half saw the Lions extend their lead to double digits and they held on to win, 63-52. With the win, the Lions improve to 4-2 on the season, 2-1 in conference play.
Erskine jumped out to an early 12-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions responded well behind key plays by
Lizzie Teasley,
Naomi Roberts and
Hannah Harris to cut the Flying Fleet's lead to 14-10 after the first. In the first quarter the Lions were 2-14 from the field, but they connected on 6-8 from the charity stripe.
The second quarter saw the Lions quickly take the lead on a three-pointer by
Carmen Cabello-Rivera and a jumper from
Jaleia Robinson to make it 17-16, Lions with 6:41 to play before half. A three-pointer by
Natalee Goff pushed the Lions lead to five points late in the quarter, 27-22 with 1:17 to play and the Lions took a 29-24 lead into the break. The Lions offense was clicking on all cylinders in the quarter, as they shot 58.33% from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc, with Cabello-Rivera, Robinson and Goff connecting from three-point range.
The Lions pushed their lead to double-digits early in the 3
rd, with jumpers from
Naomi Roberts and a three-pointer by Goff. The Flying Fleet cut the Lions lead to 6 midway through the quarter, but then
Kate Jackson got hot, connecting from three to push the Lions lead back up to 15 points, 50-35 with 2:15 to play.
Hannah Harris closed out the quarter at the free throw line, hitting both shots to put the Lions up by 16 to end the third leading 52-36. The Lions were 7-12 from the field in the quarter, shooting a perfect 100% (7-7) from the foul line.
Roberts and Jackson made key plays early in the fourth quarter to make it 56-34, Lions with 6:53 to play. The Flying Fleet responded well, cutting the Lions lead to 9 with 3:51 to play, but the Lions closed out the game on the foul line with Teasley and Harris making key shots to give the Lions the road win, 63-52.
Naomi Roberts led the way with 19 points on the evening, while
Natalee Goff added 15 points, 8 rebounds and a block.
Hannah Harris picked up 4 assists on the night, with
Lizzie Teasley grabbing two steals.
Next up, the Lions will travel to Tigerville, SC to face North Greenville University on Saturday at 2PM.
