TIGERVILLE, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Tigerville, SC this afternoon to face the North Greenville University Trailblazers. The home team Trailblazers got off to a hot start, taking a 19-13 lead into the 2
nd quarter. After a strong 2
nd quarter for the Lions, the two teams went into halftime tied at 28-28. The Lions took control in the 3
rd quarter outscoring North Greenville 22-9, but the Trailblazers made things interesting late to pull within 4 points. The Lions finished strong to come away with a 57-53 victory, moving to 5-2 overall on the season, 3-1 in conference action.
North Greenville jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the 1
st quarter, but the Lions answered with key plays by
Hannah Harris,
Carmen Cabello-Rivera,
Lizzie Teasley and
Naomi Roberts to cut the Trailblazers lead to 19-13 heading into the 2
nd quarter. In the first, the Lions were 4-11 from the field (36%) and 4-4 from the free throw line.
The Lions carried their momentum into the 2
nd quarter.
Kate Jackson and Roberts got the scoring started for the Lions both from the paint and the free-throw line to cut North Greenville's lead to 3, 24-21 with 5:36 to play before halftime. The Lions closed out the quarter on a 8-0 scoring run, with 5 points by
Natalee Goff and a layup by Harris to make it 28-28. The Lions shot 50% in the quarter (6-12 from the field) and 1-2 from three-point range.
Kate Jackson gave the Lions the lead early in the 3
rd quarter with back-to-back layups to make it 32-28 with 9:03 to play in the quarter. Jumpers by Harris and Tasley pushed the Lions lead to 8, 38-30 with 5:42 to play in the third. With 3:17 to go,
Naomi Roberts hit a layup to make it 44-33, Lions. The Lions closed the quarter out on a 6-0 run to take a 50-37 lead into the 4
th. In the third, the Lions shot 53% from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe.
In the fourth quarter, the Trailblazers made a run, cutting the Lions lead to a point with 43 seconds to play, 52-51. Although the Lions went cold from the field in the quarter, they finished strong from the foul line, going 5-6 to close out the game with a 57-53 victory.
Naomi Roberts led the way for the Lions with 16 points and 4 blocks while
Hannah Harris added 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, a block and a steal.
Kate Jackson and
Natalee Goff each had 9 points, with Jackson adding 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
Next up, the Lions will host Toccoa Falls College on Tuesday at 5PM.
