MURFREESBORO, NC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Murfreesboro, NC today to face the Chowan University Hawks in conference action. The teams traded points and the lead early and often in the first half, with the Lions taking a 31-30 lead into the break. In the second half, the teams continued to battle, with 13 ties and 8 lead changes in the game. The contest came down to the final seconds, with the Lions earning the 52-51 victory at the foul line! With the win, the Lions improve to 7-2 on the season, 4-1 in conference play.
The game was a nailbiter from the start. The Hawks got out to a 7-4 lead, but the Lions responded to tie the game at 7 on a three-pointer by
Kate Jackson.
Naomi Roberts game the Lions a 9-7 lead on a layup, but the Hawks closed out the first on a 6-0 run to take a 13-10 lead int the 2
nd. The Lions shot 31% from the field in the first quarter, connecting on 1-8 from the three-point line.
The Lions offense started clicking in the 2
nd quarter. Jackson and Carmen-Cabello Rivera started off the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Lions a 16-13 lead. A layup by Roberts pushed the Lions lead to 5 with 8:00 to play in the 2nd. The Hawks responded well with a 9-0 run to take the lead, 22-18. Late in the quarter, the Lions took the lead on a jumper by Cabello-Rivera, 29-27 and closed out the quarter strong to take a 31-30 lead into the half. In the 2
nd, the Lions shot 9-19 from the field (47%) and 3-10 from the 3-point line.
A jumper by
Hannah Harris and a free throw by Jackson pushed the Lions lead to 34-30 early in the 3
rdquarter. The Hawks responded to tie the game at 34-34 with 3:44 to play in the 3
rd, taking a two-point lead into the fourth, 40-38.
The fourth quarter saw both teams continue to battle. The teams traded points and the lead for much of the quarter, with the Lions leading by as much as three points on two occasions. With the teams tied at 51-51 late, it was the Lions leading scorer,
Naomi Roberts who hit the winning shot from the foul line to give the Lions the game, 52-51. The Lions shot 4-8 from the field in the quarter, 5-10 from the foul line.
Three Lions ended the afternoon in double figures with
Naomi Roberts leading the way with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
Carmen Cabello-Rivera finished the day with 15 points, going 6-13 from the field, and
Kate Jackson ended the day with a double-double, 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday as they host the Shorter University Hawks in conference play at 5PM.
