QUINCY, IL – The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball team completed their play in the QU Invitational today with a game against host, Quincy University. The game was competitive from the start, with the Lions making key plays in each set, but the Hawks prevailed to win 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16). With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-7 on the season.
In the first set, the Hawks jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The Lions responded well with kills by
Oliwer Wrobel,
Andrew Michael and
Carlos Guerrero to cut the Hawks lead to 10-7. A 5-1 run by Quincy pushed the Hawks lead back up to 15-8 midway through the set. The Hawks would lead by as much as 7, 20-13 but the Lions would mount a comeback behind a kill by
Thijs Van der Wal and attack errors by the Hawks, to make it 21-16. The Hawks would close out the set strong to take it, 25-18.
The second set saw the Lions jump out to a 4-2 lead behind kills by Guerrero and Van der Wal and an ace by
Ariq Casas. The Hawks would answer back to tie things at 6 and continue on an 8-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. Another scoring run would put the Hawks up 20-13 late in the set, but the Lions responded with a kill by
Elek Cumming and an error by the Hawks to cut the lead to 20-15. The Hawks would close out the set with a kill to take it, 25-18.
Quincy carried their momentum into the third set by starting it off with a 3-0 run. The Lions responded well with a run of their own to tie things at 7 on a kill by
Andrew Michael. The Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to make it 17-10. The Lions would make a few key plays late in the set, but the Hawks would take the win, 25-16 and earn the 3-0 victory.
Overall, the Lions had 25 kills, 3 aces, 6 blocks, 25 assists and 23 digs.
Thijs Van der Wal led the team with 7 kills while
Carlos Guerrero added 6.
Andrew Michael,
Ariq Casas and
Elek Cumming each recorded an ace, while
Josh Staehler led the team with 7 digs.
Greg Bodus had 3 blocks on the night, while
Ariq Casas had 17 assists.
