Young Harris, GA – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Young Harris, GA tonight to take on the Mountain Lions of Young Harris College in conference play. It was a slow start offensively for both teams, but the Lions picked up the pace in the 2
nd quarter to take a ten-point lead into the break, 27-17. In the second half
The first quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team getting into a rhythm offensively. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but then the teams went on a seven-minute scoring drought. The Lions were 1-11 from the field and 2-4 from the foul line in the first. After the first, Young Harris led the Lions, 6-4.
The Lions picked things up in the second quarter, taking the lead early on a jumper by
Abby Crawford. The Mountain Lions responded well, retaking the lead until
Naomi Roberts connected from three-point range with 3:25 to play before the break to give the Lions a 17-15 advantage. The Lions closed out the quarter on a 10-2 scoring run, behind key plays by
Maddie Futch,
Lizzie Teasley and Roberts to take a 27-17 lead into the half. In the quarter, the Lions were 8-12 from the field (67%) and 3-5 from three-point range.
The third quarter, the Lions continued to control the pace of the game by playing strong defense and picking up 18 points in the paint. The Lions extended their lead to as much as 16 points behind strong play from Crawford who scored 8 of her 13 points in the 3
rd quarter. The Lions shot 44% from the field in the quarter and were 7-8 from the foul line. After the third, the Lions led by 14, 42-28.
In the final quarter, the Mountain Lions went on a scoring run to bring the game within nine points with 5:38 to play, 47-38. With 4:55 to play,
Maddie Futch made a key layup to push the Lions back out in front by 11. The Mountain Lions outscored the Lions 11-7 in the fourth, but
Three Lions finished the night in double figures scoring with
Naomi Roberts leading the way with 15 points.
Maddie Futch and
Abby Crawford each had 13 points on the night.
Addie Penick led the Lions in rebounding with 9, while
Ade'Jah James grabbed 6. Penick also led the Lions in assists (3) and blocks (2).
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday at 2PM as they host the Barton College Bulldogs at the Shaw Athletic Center.
