The Emmanuel Baseball team hosted the King University Tornado in conference action this weekend. The Lions opened up the weekend with a 13-5 victory in game one. They carried the momentum into game two with a 11-6 win and closed out the series with a thrilling 19-18 win! With the sweep, the Lions improve to 14-17 on the season, 7-11 in conference action.
GAME ONE –
The Lions opened up the scoring in the 2
nd inning.
Hayden Beall got things started with a single to centerfield.
Nick Madrigal singled to left field to advance Beall to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and
Dobbs Bowden took advantage with a 2-out single to left field to score two runs, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. Conference Carolinas Player of the Week,
Ryan Muniz kept his hitting streak going with a triple to score Bowden and scoring himself on an error to make it 4-0, Lions.
The Tornado got a run back in the top of the 3
rd to make it 4-1, Lions.
After a few scoreless innings, the Lions added a run to their lead in the bottom of the 6
th. Madrigal singled to start the inning and
Austin Bourrie followed that up with a single of his own.
Dee Oliver kept the inning going with a single to 3
rd base, advancing to 2
nd on an error and scoring Madrigal to make it 5-1, Lions.
In the top of the 7
th the Tornado scored a run on 2 hits to make it 5-2. The Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Jesus Cruz got hit by a pitch to take a base.
Brock Wollin followed that up with a single to right field to move Cruz to 3
rd. Beall singled to right field to score two runs, giving the Lions a 7-2 lead.
The Lions opened the game up in the bottom of the 8
th. Oliver was hit by a pitch to start the inning, advancing to 2
nd on a wild pitch. Bowden walked to put runners on 1
st and 2
nd. Cruz followed that up with a 1-out walk to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Oliver to give the Lions an 8-2 lead. Wollin kept things going with a walk, and Bowden scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2, Lions. Beall was hit by a pitch and Madrigal singled to right field to score three runs, giving the Lions a 12-2 lead. Bourrie reached on an error to score Madrigal, making it 13-2.
The Tornado scored 3 runs on 1 hit in the top of the 9
th to make the final score 13-5, Lions.
At the plate,
Hayden Beall was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's and
Nick Madrigal was 3-5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI's.
On the mound,
Noah Cantleberry got the nod. He went 6.0 innings and gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He walked 3 batters but struck out 5.
Hunter Parks came in next, going 2.0 innings and giving up 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 2 batters.
JJ Neal faced four batters and gave up 3 runs on one hit, walking 2 batters.
Gavin Richardson closed out the game for the Lions, going 1.0 inning and walking a batter.
GAME TWO
Brock Wollin got things going for the Lions with a solo homerun in the first inning to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless 2
nd inning, the Lions got back to work in the bottom of the 3
rd.
Ryan Muniz reached on an error by the 3
rd baseman and advanced to 2
nd base.
Landon Mokris took advantage of a runner in scoring position by smashing a 2-run homerun to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Tornado scored a run on 2 hits to make it 3-1, Lions in the top of the 4
th but the Lions weren't done.
Dee Oliver reached on an error to start things off.
Dobbs Bowden was hit by a pitch to put runners at 1
st and 2
nd. Muniz reached on an error, advancing to 2
nd and scoring Bowden and Oliver to push the Lions lead to 5-1.
Jesus Cruz kept the inning going with a double to left field to score Muniz, making it 6-1, Lions.
The Lions added a run to their lead in the bottom of the 5
th.
Nick Madrigal singled to center to start the at bat. After
Drew Knight walked to move Madrigal to 2
nd, Oliver singled to left to score Madrigal, making it 7-1, Lions.
King answered by scoring 2 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 6
th to make the score 7-3, Lions. The Lions responded well in the bottom half of the inning. Cruz singled to start the inning, advancing to 2
nd on a wild pitch. Wollin singled to right to score Cruz, making it 8-1, Lions. Mokris kept the inning going with a double to right to score Wollin, giving the Lions a 9-1 lead. Mokris advanced to 3
rd on a wild pitch and Madrigal brought him home by hitting a homerun to make it 11-3.
The Tornado scored 3 runs on 5 hits in the top of the 7
th to cut the Lions lead to 11-6, which would be the final score.
At the plate,
Landon Mokris went 2-3 with 3 RBI's and 3 runs scored.
Nick Madrigal went 2-4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
On the mound,
Hunter Pirkle got the start. He went 6.0 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out 8 batters, walking 3.
Hunter Parks came in to close out the game, going 1.0 inning. He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 1 batter.
GAME THREE
The Tornado got on the board first in game three, scoring 3 runs on 2 hits to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lions answered to take the lead.
Zachary Bergstrom walked to get things started.
Dee Oliver hit a one-out single to move Bergstrom to 2
nd and
Dobbs Bowden followed that up with a single to load the bases.
Ryan Muniz took full advantage by lacing a double to left field to score Oliver and Bergstrom, to make the score 3-2, King. Bowden tied things up by scoring on a ground-out and
Brock Wollin doubled to left field to score Muniz, giving the Lions a 4-3 lead.
The Tornado scored a run on two hits in the top of the 3
rd to make it 4-4. The Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Hayden Beall singled to right field to start off the at-bat. Bergstrom was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1
st and 2nd. Bowden laced a 2-out double to center to give the Lions a 6-4 lead. Muniz kept the inning going with a single to score Bowden, making it 7-4, Lions.
King opened things up offensively in the top of the 4
th, scoring 6 runs on 2 hits and an error to take a 10-7 lead. The Lions roared back.
Landon Mokris doubled to left to start things off and Beall followed suit with a double to left to score Mokris, making it 10-8, King. Not to be outdone, Bergstrom hit a 2-run homer to score Beall and tie the game at 10-10. Oliver singled to left and Bowden doubled to left to score him, giving the Lions an 11-10 lead. Bowden advanced to 3
rd on a wild pitch and Muniz was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1
st and 3
rd. Cruz kept the inning going with a single to score Bowden, moving Muniz to 3
rd and making it 12-10, Lions. A sacrifice fly scored Muniz to make it 13-10, Lions after 4.
King got two runs back in the top of the 5
th on 3 hits to make it 13-12, Lions.
The Tornado jumped ahead 18-13 in the top of the 6
th, scoring 6 runs on 3 hits. The Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning. Muniz reached on an error, advancing to 3
rd on an error. A sacrifice fly scored Muniz to make it 18-14, King. Wollin singled to center field and Beall singled to left to advance Wollin to 3
rd. Bergstrom walked to load the bases and
Tyler Bradford singled to left to score 2 runs, making it 18-16, King.
After a scoreless 7
th inning, the Lions got back in action in the 8
th. Mokris was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Beall homered to score 2 runs, tying the game at 18-18. The Tornado gave up a 2-out walk to Oliver, who stole 2
nd and advanced to 3
rd on an error by the catcher. Oliver then scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 19-18 win!!
At the plate,
Hayden Beall was 4-5 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI's, a double and a homerun.
On the mound,
Noah Olson got the nod. He threw 1.0 inning and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits. Wil Sherman relieved him to pitch 2.0 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 2 hits and struck out a batter.
Lucas Meehan faced 5 batters and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Zack Evans came in next to throw 2.0 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, walking a batter and striking out a batter.
Kody Collins faced 3 batters, giving up 2 runs on a walk.
Bubba Luke faced 3 batters and gave up 2 runs on 2 walks.
Zakk Gibbons faced 4 batters, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.
Jamin Smith threw the last 3.1 innings, giving up 2 hits, striking out 2 batters and walking 2.
