Lions Edge Barton 5-3 to Move On in Conference Carolinas Championships!

Duncan, SC – The Emmanuel Softball team continued play in the Conference Carolinas Softball Championships this afternoon with a match up against the Barton College Bulldogs in the winner's bracket. It was a pitcher's duel for the first several innings, with the Lions striking first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 7th. The Bulldogs tied things at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning to force an extra inning. The Lions took full advantage of extra time to pour one 4 runs to earn the 5-3 victory to move on in the winner's bracket. With the win, the Lions improve to 23-27 on the season. 

After six scoreless innings, the Lions got on the board in the 7th inning. 

Ciara Passmore started off the 7th inning with a walk and Aggie Bennett singled through the right side to advance Passmore to 3rd. Grace Ausborn reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to 2nd on the throw, with Bennett moving to 3rd and Passmore scoring to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Barton tied things up in the bottom of the 7th on a solo homer to make it 1-1 heading to extra innings. 

The Lions wasted no time in the top of the 8th to retake the lead. Abby Rocco was placed on 2nd to start the inning and Jaryn Gibson walked to start things off. The runners advanced a base on a ground out, then a walk to Reagan Garrett loaded the bases. Passmore singled to centerfield to score Rocco, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. Bennett walked to score Gibson, making it 3-1, Lions and Kelsey Lester doubled to score two runs, giving the Lions a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, the Bulldogs answered with 2 runs on a hit to make it 5-3, Lions which would be the final score. 

At the plate, Ellee Varner went 2-5, and Kelsey Lester picked up 2 RBI's. 

In the circle, Carly Forrester got the start going 6.1 innings. She gave up 1 run on 6 hits. Cassidy Jenkins closed out the game, going 1.2 innings. She gave up 2 runs (one earned) on  a hit.
