Christian Gordon : Outworking the Mind

11/6/2026 10:26:00 AM

Christian Gordon, a senior at Emmanuel, is gearing up for the upcoming wrestling season. His work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment both in the wrestling room and on the mat have made him a standout and an ideal feature for this column.

Christian's wrestling journey began during his freshman year at East Coweta High School. Initially, he was looking for a sport to play, with football being his first choice. However, feeling undersized for the game, he began exploring other opportunities. Fortunately, an assistant football coach who also coached the school's wrestling team introduced him to the sport. From there, the rest was history.

Wrestling is a demanding sport, but for Christian, that's exactly what makes it special.

"I love the constant grind and camaraderie," he said. "The hard practices and constant pursuit of getting better keep me going."

Of course, the challenges that make wrestling rewarding can also make it difficult. The sport requires tremendous dedication, often in pursuit of goals that aren't guaranteed. For Christian, one of the most challenging aspects has been the demands of cutting weight.

"Wrestling taught me that hard work is always necessary," he said. "But sometimes you'll still come up short."

While hard work doesn't always guarantee the outcome you want, Christian has learned that pursuing your goals is what matters most. It's a simple lesson, but one he has embraced throughout his collegiate career: If you want something, you have to be willing to go after it.

One thing Christian hopes others understand about wrestling is just how much fun the sport can be. Throughout his journey, he has not only experienced tremendous personal growth but has also built meaningful relationships along the way. Even through the toughest moments, he has cherished the memories made with those who have been alongside him through the struggle. He has found inspiration in others while also having opportunities to encourage and impact those around him.

Christian opened the season with a strong performance at the Pioneer Open hosted by Glenville State University, finishing with a 4-2 record. Three of his victories came by fall, while another came by majority decision.

When reflecting on his wrestling journey, Christian shared a lesson that extends far beyond the mat:

"Your mind works hard to make you do what's comfortable, not necessary. You must outwork your mind."

As Christian prepares for another season on the mat, his journey serves as a reminder that success is about more than wins and losses. It's about embracing the grind, pushing through challenges, building relationships, and continually striving to become better.

Good luck this season, Christian!
