Lions Take Game Three, Drop Series to UNC Pembroke 2-1

Pembroke, NC – The Emmanuel Baseball team traveled to Pembroke, NC this weekend to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves in conference action. Game one was a fun one, with both teams playing strong offensively, but the Braves edged the Lions 16-10. In game two, the Braves downed the Lions 8-4 but the Lions roared back to win game three, 6-4. With the sweep, the Lions move to 5-9 on the season, 3-6 in conference action.

GAME ONE
The Braves struck first, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the 1st

In the top of the 3rd, the Lions bats got hot. Alex Espinoza singled to start off the inning and Haidyn McGill walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  A single from Chaz Encarnacion loaded the bases and Reece Kingeter delivered with a two-out single up the middle to score Espinoza, making it 3-1, Braves. Nick Madrigal kept the inning going with a single to right center to score two runs, tying the game at 3-3. 

In the top of the 4th, the Lions took the lead. McGill was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and Dee Oliver singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Aidan Feather took full advantage, smashing a homerun to right field to give the Lions the 6-3 lead. The Braves answered in the bottom half of the inning scoring 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 errors to make it 8-6, Braves.

The Lions roared back in the top of the 5th. Tyler Bradford singled to start off the at bat and Stephen Clark reached on a fielding error to advance Bradford to 2nd. McGill singled to the pitcher, but advanced to 2nd on a throwing error and a run scored to cut the Braves lead to 8-7. A single up the middle from Encarnacion scored two runs, giving the Lions the 9-8 lead. A single from Feather scored Encarnacion to push the Lions lead to 10-8. The Braves got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run on 2 hits to make it 10-9 Lions.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Braves pulled ahead scoring 4 runs on 3 hits to make it 13-10. 

The Braves added 3 runs on 2 hits to their lead in the bottom of the 7th to put them ahead 16-10. 

The Lions threatened in the top of the 8th, loading the bases but a pop up to left center ended the inning with the Braves up 16-10.
In the top of the 9th, the Lions got 2 baserunners on, but a strikeout ended the inning and the game, with the Braves taking game one, 16-10.

At the plate, Aidan Feather went 3-6 with 4 RBIs and a run scored, while Chaz Encarnacion went 3-6 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

On the mound, Hunter Pirkle got the start going 3.2 innings. He gave up 8 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits and struck out 2 batters. Jacob Bodkin relieved him to throw an inning. He gave up a run on 2 hits. He walked 2 batters and struck out one. Chase Lupton came in next, giving up 4 runs on 2 hits and walking a batter, earning the loss. Zach Easton relieved him to throw an inning. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits. He walked a batter and struck out one. Matthew Delarber closed the game out for the Lions, striking out 4 batters in 2 innings of work. 

GAME TWO 

The Braves took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning on 2 hits to start off game 2. 

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Braves added 4 runs on 2 hits to push their lead to 6-0. 

The Lions answered in the top of the 4th. Aidan Feather was hit by a pitch to start off the at-bat, advancing to 2nd on a wild pitch. Reece Kingeter struck out swinging but reached on a throwing error by the catcher to put runners on 1st and 2nd. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and a single from Tyler Bradford scored Feather to put the Lions on the board, trailing the Braves 6-1. 

In the top of the 5th, the Lions bats kept swinging. Alex Espinoza walked to put a runner on 1st, then Haidyn McGill reached on a fielder's choice, with Espinoza getting thrown out at 2nd. Chaz Encarnacion laced a triple down the left field line to score McGill, cutting the Braves lead to 6-2. A sac fly from Dee Oliver scored Encarnacion to make it 6-3, Braves. UNCP got a run back in the bottom half of the inning to push their lead to 7-3. 

Bradford doubled to right centerline to start off the 6th inning strong, advancing to 3rd on a fielding error. Stephen Clark hit a sac fly to right center, scoring Bradford to make the score 7-4, Braves. The Braves tacked on a run on a hit and an error in the bottom half of the 6th to make it 8-4. 

The Lions threatened in the top of the 7th getting 2 baserunners on 2 hits, but no runs crossed to make the final score 8-4 Braves.

At the plate, Tyler Bradford went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI. 

On the mound, Ethan Pooler got the start going 4.2 innings. He gave up 7 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits. He struck out 2 batters and walked 5. Miles Dodd closed out the game, throwing 1.1 innings. He gave up a run on a hit and struck out 3 batters.

GAME THREE

Chaz Encarnacion singled to start off the third game, advancing to 2nd on a wild pitch. Aidan Feather followed that up with a one-out double to left field to score a run, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. 

In the top of the 2nd, the Lions struck again. Alex Espinoza walked to kick off the at-bat and Encarnacion was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Dee Oliver singled through the left side to load the bases and a single from Feather scored Espinoza to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Braves scored a run on an error to cut the Lions lead to 2-1. 

After a scoreless third inning, the Lions opened things up in the 4th.  McGill singled to right center to start off the at-bat. Oliver walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd and Reece Kingeter smashed a homerun to left center to clear the bases, giving the Lions the 5-1 lead. 

In the top of the 5th, the Lions added a run to their lead. Tyler Bradford struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch to start off the inning. He advanced to 2nd on a balk and Alex Calabro walked to put runners on 1stand 2nd. Both runners advanced on a groundout and Bradford scored on a wild pitch to put the Lions up 6-1. In the bottom half of the inning, the Braves answered scoring 2 runs on 2 hits and an error to make it 6-3, Lions. 

Both teams threatened the rest of the way, with the Braves cutting the Lions lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the 9thon a hit and an error to end the game. 

At the plate, Haidyn McGill and Aidan Feather collected two hits. Feather added 2 RBIs, and Reece Kingeter led the team with 3. 

On the mound, Brayden Pooler got the start. He went 4.1 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and struck out 5 batters. Blake Altschuler relieved him to face 6 batters. He gave up a run on two hits and walked two batters, striking out one. Luke Hopper closed out the game for the Lions, throwing for 4.0 innings and giving up a run on 3 hits. He walked one batter but struck out 3. 

Next up, the Lions will host Mars Hill on Tuesday.
