Lions Fall to Barton in Last Minute Nailbiter 78-67

Box Score Wilson, NC – The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team traveled to Wilson, NC this afternoon to face Barton College in conference play. The Lions jumped out ahead 16-12 early, taking a 32-30 lead into the half. The Lions pushed their lead to 8 points after three quarters of play, but the Bulldogs responded to take the lead and pull ahead in the 4th to earn the 78-67 win.

Barton jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but a pull up from Natalee Goff and a layup from Lizzie Teasley made it 5-4, Lions. Goff and Naomi Roberts combined for a 7-0 run to push the Lions lead to 12-6 with 3:01 to play in the quarter. A jumper from Kate Jackson and a layup from Roberts put the Lions up 16-12 after the first. 

In the 2nd, Natalee Goff put up a quick 6 points to push the Lions lead to double digits, 22-12. An and one opportunity for Roberts gave the Lions their biggest lead of the day, 27-14 with 4:12 to go in the quarter. The Bulldogs answered to pull within a point of the lead with 1:36 to play in the half, 27-26. The Lions closed the half leading 32-30. 

Goff and Roberts continued to lead the Lions on the offensive end to start off the third quarter, pushing the Lions lead to 39-32 with 6:41 to play in the quarter. With 4:14 to play in the third, the Bulldogs tied the game at 39-39 but the Lions roared back behind jumpers from Roberts, Jackson and Hannah Harris to push their lead back up to 8 points, 49-41 with 46 seconds to play in the quarter. A three pointer by Goff gave the Lions an 11-point lead, 52-41 but the Bulldogs answered with a three to make it 52-44 heading into the fourth quarter.  

Jackson and Roberts started the fourth quarter strong, but Barton chipped away at the Lions lead early to pull within 5 points with 7:05 to play, 59-54. The Lions used free throws from Goff to push their lead to 63-56 but the Bulldogs pulled within two points of the lead on a three-pointer to make it 63-61, Lions. With 3:36 to play, the Bulldogs took their first lead since the 1st quarter and pulled ahead to win the game, 78-67.

Natalee Goff led all scorers with 27 points on the afternoon, adding 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Naomi Roberts had 22 points on the day, with 2 assists and a block while Kate Jackson led the team with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Southern Wesleyan University at 5PM for Senior Night!
