ROME, GA - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball team opened Conference Carolinas Championship play with a match up against #9 seed, King University this afternoon in Rome, GA. The Lions jumped ahead early, taking a 35-31 lead into halftime. The Lions were outscored 23-14 by the Tornado in the 4
th quarter but held onto take the game, 70-67 to move on in the Conference Carolinas Championship. With the win, the Lions move to 14-13 on the season, 8-12 in conference play.
The teams traded points and the lead early in the 1
st quarter, with
Hannah Harris and
Natalee Goff leading the Lions in scoring. A three-pointer by
Lizzie Teasley put the Lions ahead, 12-7 with 4:07 to play. The Lions continued a 10-0 run to take the 17-7 lead on a three by
Kate Jackson. A three by Teasley put the Lions up by 10, 20-10 but the Tornado answered to cut the lead to 20-15 to end the quarter.
Points from Goff and
Naomi Roberts put the Lions up by 8 early in the 2
nd quarter, 23-15 but the Tornado answered to pull within a point of the lead, 29-28 with 2:35 to play before half. A key layup by Roberts put the Lions back up by 3, 31-28 and Roberts sunk two free-throws to end the quarter with the Lions up 35-31.
The third quarter saw the Tornado cut the Lions lead to a point early, 35-34 but jumpers from Goff and Roberts pushed the Lions lead to 39-34. The Tornado responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 39-39 with 6:04 to play in the quarter. A 10-0 run by Roberts and Goff put the Lions up 52-42, then
Kate Jackson and Goff connected from the charity stripe to put the Lions up 56-44 after the third.
The Tornado came on strong in the 4
th quarter, outscoring the Lions 23-14. King brought the game within a point late, but the Lions closed the game out on the foul line with
Naomi Roberts sinking both shots to give the Lions the 70-67 win.
Naomi Roberts led the Lions in scoring with 23 points on the night, while
Natalee Goff added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Roberts led the team with 4 assists on the night.
