FERRUM, VA- The Emmanuel Baseball team traveled to Ferrum, VA to face Ferrum College in conference action. The Panthers took game one, 10-5 but the Lions roared back to pour on the runs in a doubleheader on Saturday, coming back from trailing 9-3 to earn the 12-10 victory in game two and carrying their momentum into game three with a dominant, 28-3 victory to earn the 2-1 series win.
GAME ONE
The Lions jumped on the board early in the 1
st inning. After a single by
Jaden Madrid to centerfield,
Nick Madrigal walked to put runners on 1
st and 2
nd.
Tyler Bradford kept the at-bat going with a double down the left field line to score a run, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Dee Oliver singled to 3
rd to score two runs, pushing the Lions lead to 2-0.
Hunter Pirkle started on the mound for the Lions, sitting the Panthers down in order.
The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the 2
nd on a solo homerun to make the score 2-1, Lions after two.
The Panthers opened the game up in the bottom of the 3
rd. giving up three hits including a 3-run homerun to give Ferrum the 5-2 lead.
The Panthers picked up a run on 2 hits in the bottom of the 4
th to push their lead to 6-2.
The Lions answered in the top of the 5
t. After
Haidyn McGill and
Jaden Madrid walked to start off the at-bat,
Aidan Feather doubled to left center to score two runs, cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Panthers responded, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 5
th to make the score 8-4.
The Lions scored a run in the top of the 6
th.
Chaz Encarnacion and
Alex Calabro walked to start off the inning and McGill reached on an error to load the bases. Madrid grounded into a double play, with Encarnacion scoring to cut the Panthers lead to 8-5. The Panthers scored a run on 2 hits in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-5 lead.
The Panthers added a run on 2 hits in the bottom of the 7
th to make the final score 10-5.
At the plate,
Dee Oliver led the way going 2-4 on the afternoon.
Hunter Pirkle threw 4.0 innings, giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits. He struck out 2 batters.
Luke Hopper relieved him to pitch an inning. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and walked a batter.
Miles Dodd closed the game, throwing 3.0 innings and giving up a run on 4 hits. He struck out 3 batters and walked one.
GAME TWO
The Lions threatened in the top of the 2
nd, with a walk to
Tyler Bradford and a single by
Chaz Encarnacion, but a groundout ended the at-bat with the game knotted at 0-0.
Ethan Pooler started on the mound for the Lions and sat the Panthers down in order in the bottom of the 2
nd with a strikeout and a double play.
The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the 3
rd, scoring 4 runs on 5 hits to take a 4-0 lead.
The Lions responded well in the top of the 4
th.
Aidan Feather singled to start off the at-bat, and
Nick Madrigal laced a double to left field to advance Feather to 3
rd. A groundout scored Feather to get the Lions on the board, 4-1 and a double by
Tyler Bradford cut the Panthers lead to 4-2.
Chaz Encarnacion kept the at-bat going with his second hit of the day, scoring a run to make it 4-3, Panthers. In the bottom of the 4
th, the Panthers answered, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits to take a 7-3 lead.
The Lions loaded the bases in the top of the 5
th, with walks to Feather,
Jaden Madrid, and
Matt Layton, but a strikeout ended the at-bat with the Panthers up, 7-3. In the bottom of the 5
th, Ferrum tacked on two runs to their lead to go up 9-3.
After a scoreless 6
th inning, the Lions rallied in the top of the 7
th. After
Davis Roesler and Madrigal were hit by a pitch and
Aidan Feather walked, Layton singled to left field to score Roesler to make the score, 9-4. Another hit batter brought in a run and a run scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-6, Ferrum. A single by Encarnacion to centerfield scored Layton, and a sacrifice fly cut the Panther's lead to a run, 9-8. A single by
Jaden Madrid scored the Lion's 9
th run of the game, tying the game at 9-9.
In the top of the 8
th, the Lions bats stayed hot. Feather singled to left to start off the at-bat and Madrigal doubled to right center to score him, giving the Lions the 10-9 lead. A single by Layton scored pinch runner,
Austin Bourrie to make it 11-9, Lions and a sacrifice fly by Encarnacion scored Layton to put the Lions up 12-9. In the bottom of the 8
th, the Panthers got a run back, scoring a run on a hit to make the final score, 12-10 Lions.
At the plate,
Chaz Encarnacion went 4-4 with 3 RBI's and a run scored, while
Aidan Feather and
Tyler Bradford went 2-3, with Feather scoring 3 runs.
On the mound,
Ethan Pooler got the start going 3.1 innings. He gave up 7 runs on 8 hits and struck out 3 batters, walking 3.
Joseph Rice relieved him to pitch 2.2 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and walked 2 batters.
Zach Evans earned the win for the Lions, pitching an inning and giving up a run on a hit. He struck out a batter and walked one. Matthew Delabar earned the save, throwing an inning and giving up a hit.
GAME THREE
The Lions carried their momentum into game three. After two scoreless innings, the Lions offense exploded for 11 runs in the top of the 3
rd.
After two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases,
Nick Madrigal singled to right field to score a run, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Will Phipps kept things going with a single to left to score two runs, pushing the lead to 3-0. A single by
Chaz Encarnacion loaded the bases and
Alex Calabro reached on an error to score a run, making it 4-0 Lions.
Seth Ranta kept the at-bat going with a double to center to score two runs, giving the Lions a 6-0 lead. Madrid kept things going with a 2-RBI single to left center to make it 8-0. After a single by Layton, Feather singled to left center to bring in two runs, pushing the Lions lead to 10-0. After a single by Madrigal, Phipps doubled to score Feather, making it 11-0 Lions.
Emmanuel continued to pour on the runs in the top of the 4
th. The bases quickly loaded with a walk to Madrid and two batters getting hit by a pitch.
Tyler Bradford kept things going with a single to 3
rd to score Madrid, giving the Lions a 12-0 lead. Phipps was hit by a pitch to score a run, and a 2-RBI single by Encarnacion made it 15-0, Lions.
The Lions added two runs in the top of the 5
th. After a walk to Ranta, Madrid doubled to left field to advance Ranta to 3
rd. After a walk to Nick McCoy, a run scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 16-0, Lions. A single by Westbrook made it 17-0 to end the at-bat.
The offensive explosion continued in the top of the 6
th. With the bases loaded, a single by McCoy scored two runs to make it 19-0, Lions. Feather walked to reload the bases and Westbrook and Goltermann each walked in runs to push the Lions lead to 21-0.
Hudson Roach continued the at-bat with a double to left field to score two runs and a single by Encarnacion scored Goltermann to make it 24-0, Lions. Ranta and Madrid each singled to close out the at-bat, bringing in two runs to make it 26-0, Lions after 6.
After a scoreless 7
th, the Lions added to their lead in the top of the 8
th. Roach and Bourrie both picked up singled to start off the at-bat.
Stephen Clark reached on an error to load the bases and Roach scored on a double play, with Bourrie advancing to 3
rd to make it 27-0, Lions. Madrid singled to score a run, giving the Lions a 28-0 lead. The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the 8
th, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits to make the final score 28-3, Lions.
At the plate,
Jaden Madrid went 4-5 with 4 RBIs and 5 runs scored, while
Chaz Encarnacion stayed perfect on the day, going 3-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
On the mound,
Brayden Pooler got the start going 5.0 innings. He gave up 2 hits and struck out 6 batters, walking 2.
Lucas Meehan relieved him to throw 3.0 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 5 batters.
Hunter Maddox closed the game for the Lions, pitching 1.0 inning and striking out a batter.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Milledgeville, GA to face Georgia College & State University at 5PM.
