FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Strength comes from rising every time you fall.
The Emmanuel Lions softball team lost a tightly close game against Brevard College 8 to 6 last night in their first game of the double header. Samantha Ely, a freshman from Jonesvills, Va. came in clutch, hitting two home runs over the fence to keep the Lions alive. After hitting her first college home runs she was asked what it felt like at that moment and she responded, "Being a freshman, performing for my team the way I did in the first game of the season made me feel great. I am blessed to have had all the learning and experience I have had so far since I have been here. I am excited to see where our team goes this season."
Both teams had a total of 5 runs in the bottom of 6th inning standing strong in defense and in offense. Both teams kept the same amount of runs going into the bottom of 7th inning bringing the first game into an extra inning ball game. In the top of the 8th, Brevard had two runners on and Casey Whitaker stepped up to the plate hitting a home run, scoring 3 runs for Brevard. In the bottom of the 8th, the Lions had Bethany Campbell on second base who scored off of a base hit by Samantha Ely bringing the ball game to a 2 run difference. Emmanuel was not able to score after which ended the game at the final score 8 to 6.
Ralph Waldo Emerson has a famous quote saying; " Our greatest strength lies not in never failing but in rising each time we fall." Which is a perfect quote for the Lady Lions come back in the second game of the night. On the mound was Martie Rogers, a freshman from Dahlonega, Ga who kept the Brevard Tornadoes with only 1 run the complete game. Holly Springer (Sr.) and Kalen Callaway (Jr.) hit two shots over the fence to bring in more runs for Lions. The game ended early with a win for the Lions, becoming a run rule with the score being 9 to 1 in the bottom of 5th inning.
These ladies will continue to be successful on the field in their next game at Anderson University in South Carolina for a 4:00 and 6:00 pm double header! Come out and support if you can! Go Lions!
