Lions Earn Series Win Over #11 UNC Pembroke!

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 PEMBROKE, NC – The Emmanuel Baseball team took on the #11 ranked UNC Pembroke Braves in Conference Carolinas action this weekend. The Lions got off to a hot start, with a 4-1 win over the Braves in game one. In game two, the Braves bested the Lions 5-2 in game two, and bounced back to take game three 8-6 to take the series 2-1. The Lions improve to 13-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play
 
GAME ONE – 
 
Game one was a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring a run until the bottom of the 3rd inning. UNC Pembroke struck first with a run on one hit in the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead. 
 
The Lions bats came alive in the top of the 4th. Ryan Muniz started things off with a single. Dobbs Bowden was hit by a pitch and Bailey Stroud walked to load the bases. The runners would all advance a base and Muniz would score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Thomas Collins kept the momentum going for Emmanuel with an RBI single to score Bowden and give the Lions a 2-1 lead.  Brock Wollin would get hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brody Campbell, who took full advantage hitting a single up the middle to score Stroud and Collins. The Lions led 4-1 after the fourth. 
 
Although both teams would threaten to score multiple times the rest of the way, it was a defensive battle for the remainder of the night and the Lions would win game one, 4-1.
 
At the plate. Dobbs Bowden was 3-3 with a double. Bailey Stroud was 2-3 and Brody Campbell ended the night 2-4 with a double. 
 
On the mound, Barrett Barkley got the nod, pitching 3 innings and giving up one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked one batter. Dosie Drakeford relieved him and pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three hits and striking out one. Simon Boggie came in next, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up two hits and striking out two. Clifford Brown earned his third save of the season, pitching the final two innings and giving up just one hit, striking out four. 
 
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday to finish the series. 
 
GAME TWO 
 
The Lions got on the board first in game two in the top of the 2nd. Brody Campbell got on base with a walk and Hayden Beall reached on an error. Dobbs Bowden reached on a fielder's choice to score Campbell and give the Lions a 1-0 lead.  
 
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the 5th. Brock Wollin started things off with a single to left. Braeden Eavenson pinch ran for Wollin and stole second. Campbell walked and Eavenson advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error to make it 2-0, Lions. The Braves tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th, scoring two runs on three hits and an error, leaving two on base. 
 
In the bottom of the 6th, the Braves took their first lead of the game scoring three runs on one hit, leaving two on base to take a 5-2 lead.
 
There was nothing going for the Lions in the top of the 7th, so the Braves took game 2, 5-2. 
 
At the plate, Brock Wollin and Hayden Beall were 1-2. 
 
On the mound, Ethan Pooler got the start going 4.2 innings. He gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two batters. Dosie Drakeford came in to face two batters, walking one. Clifford Brown finished the game off for the Lions, pitching an inning and giving up three runs on one hit, walking four batters and striking out one. 
 
GAME THREE 
 
In game three, the Lions got a fast start out of the game. Jesus Cruz was hit by the pitcher to start things off. Thomas Collins followed that up with a single to center and Brody Campbell walked to load the bases. Nick Dietsch walked in a run to give the Lions a 1-0 lead early, then Hayden Beall cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it 5-0 Lions. 
 
In the bottom of the third, the Braves would tie things up at 5, scoring five runs on four hits and one error. 
 
The Lions responded in the top of the 4th. Bailey Stroud reached on a wild pitch and Cruz followed that up reaching base on an error. The runners would advance on a wild pitch, and Stroud would score on a sacrifice fly by Brock Wollin to make it 6-5, Lions. Cruz would score on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, UNCP would score one run on two hits, leaving one runner on base to make it 7-6, Emmanuel.
 
In the top of the 7th, the Lions got back on the board. Dietsch started things off with a walk and Beall got on base in the same fashion. Ryan Muniz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dobbs Bowden flied out to centerfield to score Dietstch and make it 8-6 Lions. The Lions would hold onto the lead to win the game, 8-6 and the series over #11 UNCP, 2-1.
 
At the plate, Collins, Campbell, Dietsch, and Bowden all collected a hit but it was Hayden Beall's grand slam that gave the Lions the momentum. 
 
On the mound, Noah Cantleberry got the start and pitched 3.0 innings. He gave up five runs on four hits, striking out two and walking four batters. Bubba Luke earned the win, pitching an inning. He gave up one run on two hits, striking out a batter and walking another. Chase Lupton relieved him and pitched 4 strong innings, striking out four and giving up just one hit. Simon Boggie earned the save for the Lions, pitching an inning and striking out two batters.
