Lions Up for the Challenge at Presbyterian!

CLINTON, SC – The Emmanuel Women's Wrestling team traveled to Presbyterian College on Sunday to compete in the Blue Hose Challenge. The Lions faced off against top competition such as Iowa, Presbyterian, and University of Mount Olive and were up to the challenge coming away with four wrestlers placing in the top 5, including junior, Karissa Turnwall who finished the tournament in first place at 117lbs.

HIGHLIGHTS – 

At 117lbs. Karissa Turnwall went a perfect 4-0 with three wins by tech fall and one by fall to win the tournament.  She finished the tournament with 2 points scored on her in four bouts.
  • Karissa defeated Brooke Madden of Huntingdon via fall, 4-0 (:32)
  • Turnwall followed that up with a win over Ahriana Scales of Mount Olive by tech fall 10-0 (2:43)
  • She kept her win streak going with a 10-0 tech fall win over Jenna Anderson of Division 1 host, Presbyterian. 
  • She finished the tournament with a dominant 12-2 tech fall win over Harlee Hiller of powerhouse, Iowa (5:45).
At 131 lbs. Janida Garcia continued to shine, going 4-1 in the tournament for a 2nd place finish. She ended the day with three wins via decision and one by tech fall.
  • Garcia kicked things off with a decision win over Tiyanna Mack of Life University (7-3)
  • She kept the momentum going with a decision victory over Laura Ruiz Diaz of Presbyterian, 11-2. 
  • Next up, Garcia won via tech fall 11-0 over Olivia Messerly of Cambell.
  • Garcia continued to make a statement with a tough decision victory over Karlee Brooks of Iowa (5-4), later falling in the first-place match to Bella Williams of Iowa (4-0). 
At 207lbs. Gemma Templeman finished 3rd with a tournament record of 3-1 with two wins by fall and one by tech fall. 
  • Gemma started the tournament with a win by fall over Emma Lozada of Emory & Henry, 2-0 (1:32)
  • Following a decision loss, Templeman posted a dominant 11-0 tech fall win over Aniyah Griffin of Huntingdon (5:44). 
  • She ended the tournament with an 11-0 win by fall over Andrea Smith of Mount Olive (2:58)
At 138lbs. Gianna DiBenedetto finished the tournament with 5th with a record of 4-2. She ended the day with three wins by tech fall and one by fall. 
  • She started things off with a win by fall over Victoria Huffman of Campbell 5-0 (1:19). 
  • Following a loss by fall, Gianna responded well with a win by JahMya Hill of Allen via fall 8-0 (1:07).
  • DiBenedetto kept the momentum going with a win via fall over Kalyse Hill of Mount Olive, 6-1 (1:33). 
  • Following a tech fall loss, Gianna closed the tournament out with an 11-0 win by tech fall over Kinnley Smith of Indiana Tech.
The Lions will be back in action on November 21-22 at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, MO.
