Turnwall, Garcia Named All-Americans, Lions Wrestle Well at NCAA National Championship

CORALVILLE, IA – Over the weekend, six Emmanuel Women's Wrestlers competed at the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championship. The Lions made some noise in the tournament, with junior, Karissa Turnwall and sophomore, Janida Garcia earning All-American honors. Turnwall finished the tournament in 4th place, where Garcia took 6th.

RESULTS

KARISSA TURNWALL (117 lb. Weight Class)
  • Turnwall came into the tournament as the #2 seed. She started the weekend off with a tech fall win over Trinity Howard of West Liberty, 10-0 in 1:48. 
  • She followed that up with another tech fall win over Shea Reisel of Dubuque (11-1, 4:27) to pave her way to the semifinals.
  • In the semifinals, Turnwall fell to #3 seed, Riley Rayome of North Central by tech fall, 12-2 (5:57).
  • Turnwall closed out her weekend with a tech fall win over Carleigh Czerneski of Adrian, 14-4 (6:00) and a 4-2 loss by decision to Brianna Gonzales of Iowa. 
  • Turnwall finished 4th on the weekend to become a three-time All-American. 
JANIDA GARCIA (131 lb. Weight Class) 
  • After a hard-fought decision 3-0 decision loss to Cassia Zammit of West Liberty, Garcia won by tech fall (11-0) over Isis Severe of Allen. 
  • Next, she won by fall over Kassey Daughtery of Presbyterian in just 31 seconds, 4-0. 
  • She continued a hot streak, in a close decision win over #4 seed, Karlee Brooks of Iowa, 3-2. 
  • Garcia closed out the tournament losing her final two matches to 2 seed, Aubre Krazer of Lehigh and #5 seed, Abigail Mozden of Mount Union. 
  • Garcia finished 6th on the weekend to earn All-American status. 
GEMMA TEMPLEMAN (180 lb. Weight Class)
  • After a first-round tech fall loss to Azariah Moore of Lock Haven (10-0, 4:09), Templeman won by decision 10-5 over Maryam Ndiaye of Augustana.
  • She carried that momentum into her next match, defeating Isabella Gretzinger of Presbyterian by decision 4-4. 
  • Templeman closed out the tournament with a 6-0 loss by fall (4:12) to Paige Maher of Simon Fraiser.
 
ALEXANDRA FORD (145 lb. Weight Class)
  • The freshman opened the tournament with a hard-fought decision victory over #3 seed, Zoey Lints of Elmira College (5-3). 
  • Ford went onto face Annelise Obermark of Simpson, falling by tech fall 12-1 (4:43). She closed the tournament with a 4-2 loss by fall to Zoey Hines of Eastern.
REBEKAH JEAN-BAPTISTE (103 lb. Weight Clas) 
  • Jean-Baptiste opened the tournament with a loss to eventual National Champion, Valarie Solorio of Iowa, 11-0.
  • She bounced back to earn a hard-fought 9-7 win by decision against Lillian Prendergast of Mount Olive but fell in her final match to Alexis Winecke of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, 10-0.
VIDA BECKEL (160 lb. Weight Class)
  • Vida Beckel faced Olympic Silver Medalist and eventual National Champion, Kennedy Blades to start off the weekend. Beckel fell 10-0 by fall. 
  • She followed that up with a 5-3 loss by fall to Lene McCrackin of Simon Frasier.
 
The Lions finished 14th out of 49 teams.
