The Strongest Bond - Spotlight on Emily & Leah Chavez

There's something special about sisters. Sisters not only share the same genetics but also share a heightened sense of awareness and understand each other's thoughts and emotions without needing explanation.

When the buzzer sounded in Emily Chavez's final high school soccer game, her sister Leah was the first person to hug her. Emily held onto that moment, thinking that it would be the last time the two would share the field, since Leah was two years younger.

But God had other plans.

This fall, the Chavez sisters will take the field together again, but this time, as members of the Emmanuel Women's Soccer team.

Emily, a junior transfer from Alabama A&M, finished the 2025 season with three goals from the attacking midfielder position. The Lions finished the year with an overall record of 6-7-4, 6-4-3 in conference action, boasting the program's first Southwest Division Title.

Leah joins the team in the same role, attacking midfielder. The sisters played on the same team for 2-3 years, both at a high level in club soccer and in Emily's final two years of high school at Pasadena Memorial High School in Houston, TX.

What are the Lions getting in the Chavez sisters?

"Leah is a very confident player who knows her way on and off the ball," Emily said. "She understands the game really well and is a playmaker at heart."

Emily believes Leah will be an immediate asset to the team.

"She is the person who understands my playing style the most. I feel like our chemistry will automatically click on the field again," Emily said. "She will bring a lot of heart and an offensive threat to the team."

As for Emily, the Lions have seen first hand the immediate impact she makes when she steps on the field.

"Her game is technical and unpredictable," Leah stated.

For Leah, the opportunity to play with her sister again was something she couldn't pass up.

"My favorite soccer memories are the times I got to share the field with Emily," Leah said. "Having my sister on campus has helped me get adjusted to college and get out of my comfort zone."

But having her sister on campus wasn't the only factor in Leah choosing the Lions.

"I chose Emmanuel because I believe it's somewhere I can grow my faith and soccer skills," she explained.

With Emily using this summer to recover from a meniscus injury, Leah is using the offseason to stay in the best shape possible through conditioning.

For both sisters, soccer has always been their passion and a love they share with their dad.

"My biggest role model throughout my career has been my dad," Emily said. "He taught me almost everything I know when it comes to soccer and always motivated me to be the best version of myself on and off the field."

"He has guided us through the ups and downs of soccer and life," Leah added.

There's something special about sisters. They share a heightened sense of awareness and often know the others' next move. For the Chavez sisters, in particular, they hold the midfield with an unspoken trust, proving that the strongest bond on the field is a sisterhood.
