Box Score Franklin Springs, GA—Emmanuel College Men's Lacrosse (3-10, 2-4) defeated the visiting North Greenville University Crusaders (1-14, 1-5) in a 12-11 overtime thriller. The game was a day of firsts for Emmanuel Lacrosse as the program celebrated its first senior Blake Duncan (New Westminster, BC), Gabriel Bostick's (Birmingham, AL) first collegiate goal, and the team's first overtime victory in three years as well as the close of the program's first year of NCAA DII and Conference Carolinas. The Conference Carolina's matinee between the two new programs determined the fifth place spot in the conference.
Emmanuel got the scoring started early just under one minute in the game with a Darian Richardson (Duluth, GA) goal assisted by Austin Brundage (Leesburg, VA). After exchanging goals, the Lions took an early 4-3 lead going into the second quarter. The second quarter saw more of a back and forth battle as the Lions edged out an 8-5 lead heading into half time.
EC jumped out to an 11-5 lead, the largest lead of the game, with a flurry of goals by Justin Mills (Spartanburg, SC) in the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Crusaders were not done though as they scored six unanswered goals in the second half, and NGU's Brandon Petter tied the game at all 11 with just 4:43 left in the game. Both teams had their opportunities to seal the victory, but couple of big saves from NGU's goalie Will Thornton and a timely caused turnover from EC defender Roman Tavani (Suwanee, GA) would keep the game tied at the end of regulation.
Overtime did not disappoint the hundred and fifty plus fans as NGU face-off specialist Allen McBride won the draw allowing the Crusaders to take a time out and draw up a play. Out of the time out, the Crusaders were able to get a clean shot off but Lions' goalie Blake Duncan made a kick save to keep EC's hopes alive. On the ensuing Emmanuel possession, Darian Richardson was able to beat his defender and score the game-winning goal with just 2:14 left in OT.
Drew Wassenaar led the offensive effort for NGU with a hat trick and an assist. Emmanuel's Darian Richardson led both teams in points with 5 goals and an assist, Justin Mills had a hat trick and an assist, and Austin Brundage had a pair of goals and a pair of assists to continue his streak of multi-point games to seven consecutive games with two or more points. Defensively, Blake Duncan ended his collegiate career with his third win of the year while also leading all goalies in the games with 12 saves.
