Lions Roll Past Shorter, 14-8

DULUTH, GA. - The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team defeated Shorter University 14-8 in their second game of the season on Saturday night. This win brings the Lions record to 1-1 overall.

FIRST PERIOD

The Lions got off 9 shots in the opening seven minutes of play before finally connecting for the first goal of the game. Shamaz Durrant would score with an assist from Alex Stull to spark a three goal run for EC. Michael Balsamides followed just over a minute later with a goal to extend Emmanuel's lead. 30 seconds later, Alex Stull would score with an assist from Justin Parker to lead Shorter 3-0. The Hawks responded in the final minutes of the first period by cutting the Lions lead to 3-1.

SECOND PERIOD

Shorter wasted no time firing in their second goal of the night to start the second period. The Lions responded by silencing the Hawks with a vicious six point run that carried into the third period. Lance Olson, Shamaz Durrant, Matthew Mitchell, and Allan Velasquez all recorded goals to bring EC's lead to 7-2 before half-time.

THIRD PERIOD

The Lions onslaught continued after halftime with Stull and Mitchell each picking up their second goals of the night. The teams would then exchange points with Shorter's Jacob Woodard scoring his first goal of the night before Stull connected with a nice behind the back shot to put the Lions in double-digits. The Hawks would score with 17 seconds left on the clock to cut EC's lead to 6 before the final period.

FOURTH PERIOD

Despite Shorter's best quarter of the night, the Hawks were unable to turn the game around as the Lions matched their four goal pace. EC capitalized on back to back man-up opportunities with Velasquez scoring his second goal of the night before Justin Parker scored his first. Shorter's Gunnar Uutinen would temporarily disrupt Emmanuel's largest lead of the night with a goal before Mitchell stole it back with his third goal. The Hawks combined for three more goals on the night while the Lions put in one more to capture the victory, 14-8.

Matthew Mitchell led the Lions with 4 goals, Alex Stull followed closely behind with 3. Justin Parker recorded 4 assists. Ethan Brundage had 8 saves on 10 shots and allowed 2 goals in the first half. Luke Harris recorded 5 saves on 11 shots and allowed 6 goals in the final 30 minutes of play.

Statistically the Lions had 56 shots with 29 on goal, 46 groundballs, 21 turnovers, and 16 caused turnovers.

Next up, the Lions take on Newberry on Tuesday, February 18th at Rabbit Hill Park in Duluth, Georgia.
