Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. - The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team fell to Mars Hill University 15-13 on Saturday afternoon. This loss brings the Lions record to 1-3 overall.
FIRST PERIOD
EC matched pace with Mars Hill in the opening quarter as both teams scored four goals. The Mars Hill Lions scored first in the opening two minutes. The Lions would fire back three minutes later with a goal from Shamaz Durrant off an assist by Matthew Mitchell. MHU responded with two more goals to extend their lead to 3-1. Durrant would score again before Alex Stull scored his first to tie up the game 3-3. The opposing Lions would fire four more shots before finding the net with four minutes left to play. As the quarter wound down, Justin Parker would deliver one last goal to tie the game 4-4.
SECOND PERIOD
The Lions were outscored 6-2 in the second quarter and found themselves trailing 10-6 at halftime. Lance Olson and Alex Stull picked up one gaol apiece.
THIRD PERIOD
Trailing by 4 points, the Lions countered with their strongest quarter of the night. A five point run started with a goal from Allan Velasquez just 18 seconds in. Justin Parker, Alex Stull, and Lance Olson would all score within three minutes of each other to eliminate Mars Hill's lead, 10-10. One more goal from Stull followed to complete the five point run and boost EC to their first lead of the night, 11-10. With 19 seconds left in the period, MHU found their way into the net to tie up the game 11-11.
FOURTH PERIOD
In the final period, the Mars Hill Lions began to build momentum once again and put in three unanswered goals, propelling them to a 14-11 lead. Durrant responded with his third and fourth goals to cut into MHU's lead and draw the Lions within one goal. Despite EC's efforts to overcome the opposing Lions, Mars Hill recorded one final goal to seal the victory 15-13.
Durrant led the Lions with four goals, Velasquez had 3 assists.
Ethan Brundage recorded 6 saves on 16 shots and allowed 10 goals in the first half. Luke Harris totaled 9 saves on 14 shots and allowed 5 goals in the final two periods of play.
The Lions totaled 32 shots, 30 groundballs, 20 turnovers and 6 caused turnovers.
Next up, EC will return home for a game against Pfieffer University on Wednesday, February 16th.
